SGS Expands Mattress Testing Facility

Mattresses can be combustible, which is why flammability standards have been introduced to suppress fires started by sparks—which caused an estimated 95 deaths annually from 2002-2005.

Since then, studies have been done to see how well flammability standards work, and those studies found that the standard prevented 65 deaths from bed fires annually in 2015 and 2016.

To help retailers and manufacturers ensure their products are up to code, SGS—a testing, inspection, and certification company—recently expanded its mattress testing facility in Farmingdale, New York.

The 15,000-square-foot physical and fire testing facility now offers complete mattress testing services, and new physical testing equipment broadens the lab’s scope to include Cornell Impact Testing and Rollator Testing.

This covers the following standards:

  • ASTM F1550-16;
  • BFD IX-11;
  • 16 CFR Part 1633;
  • BS 6807:2006;
  • BS EN 597-1 2015; and
  • BS EN 597-2-2015.
